The South Bay Has Always Had a Soundtrack

The South Bay Has Always Had a Soundtrack

By Garlin Smith | The Condo Experts | Redondo Beach, CA

Living in the South Bay since college, one thing has stayed remarkably consistent: this place loves its music. Deeply, unapologetically, year-round.

Part of that goes back to the surf and skate culture that defined this stretch of coastline for decades. That same energy that produced the South Bay’s outdoor, community-rooted identity also gave rise to some of the most influential punk bands in American music: the Descendents, Circle Jerks, Black Flag, and Pennywise all have roots here. That’s not a footnote. It’s a thread that runs through the whole scene.

The music scene here reflects all of it. It’s accessible, community-rooted, and on any given weekend there’s something worth going to.

Here’s my personal tour.

The Lighthouse: Where It All Started

If you’re going to talk about music in the South Bay, you have to start at The Lighthouse Café on Pier Ave in Hermosa Beach. The building has been there since 1934, became a bar in 1940, and in 1949 a bassist named Howard Rumsey talked the owner into hosting a Sunday jazz jam session that would quietly change American music history.

The Lighthouse became one of the most celebrated jazz venues in the country. Miles Davis played there. Charlie Parker. Chet Baker. Woody Herman. It was considered the epicenter of the West Coast jazz movement, and it drew Hollywood elites and college students alike out to a little beach town that most of Los Angeles barely knew existed. At a time when racial segregation shaped much of Southern California, the Lighthouse invited Black musicians to perform, a progressive stance that helped define its legacy.

Jazz still plays at the Lighthouse on weekends, as well as local artists and touring cover bands almost every night.

Polliwog Park: Summer’s Official Start

Every summer, Concerts in the Park returns to Polliwog Park in Manhattan Beach, bringing free live music to the South Bay every Sunday from early July through early September. Free admission, blankets on the grass, families and neighbors, and people who’ve been coming for decades. The lineup ranges from Motown to big band to classic rock; nothing edgy, everything enjoyable. It’s one of the few remaining places in coastal LA where you can spread out on a Sunday evening with a picnic and two thousand of your loosely-acquainted neighbors and feel genuinely at home.

The Pier: Naja’s, Project Barley, and the Deep End

The Redondo Beach Pier has always had a certain energy, a little rougher around the edges than its neighbors to the north, a little more real. The music scene on the pier reflects that.

Naja’s Place has been a South Bay institution for decades, the kind of bar that has 100 beers on tap and a live music calendar that skews toward what the regulars actually want to hear. Project Barley brings a craft beer garden vibe with regular live performances. And the Deep End Live has established itself as a newer anchor for local and regional acts looking for a proper stage and a crowd that shows up to listen.

On a summer weekend, the pier hops. It’s not curated or self-conscious; it’s just alive. For buyers looking at condos in North Redondo Beach, the pier is less than 2 miles from most addresses in the neighborhood.

Hermosa Saloon and the Holiday Circuit

The Hermosa Saloon has been a consistent presence on the Hermosa Beach live music scene, the kind of spot that books local bands and loyal crowds in equal measure. And if you’ve never done the holiday season in Hermosa Beach, put it on the list. The annual holiday festivals bring bands to Pier Plaza and the surrounding streets in a way that turns the whole downtown into a block party with better lighting than usual.

The Crown Jewel: Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center

And then there’s the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center, which is, by any measure, the most serious arts venue in the South Bay. It hosts touring acts, orchestral performances, comedy, theater, and a programming calendar that punches well above what you’d expect from a beach city of this size. If you’re the kind of person who wants world-class performance less than 2 miles from most North Redondo Beach addresses, this is the place.

Why It Matters for How You Live

I’m a real estate agent, so I’m supposed to talk about square footage and HOA fees. And I do, in other posts. But after 40 years here, I’m convinced that the quality of your daily life has as much to do with what’s around you as what’s inside your walls.

A neighborhood with this much music, free concerts in the park, living jazz history two blocks from the ocean, a legitimate performing arts center, and a pier full of places to hear live bands on a Friday night, is a neighborhood worth living in. And for buyers considering condos in North Redondo Beach, all of it is on your doorstep.

That’s not a sales pitch. That’s just what I’ve observed and enjoyed for many years.
